During the summer of 2021, 6 out of the 7 students enrolled in design 1.1 were gamers. After conversations in studio, everyone, 7th student and myself included, were interested and excited by the idea of making Pavilions of Reflection in the game Minecraft.
They were each assigned a 16m x 16m plot of Minecraft land where they stacked two volumes (10m x 10m x 10m) allocated for stereotomic and tectonic architecture. In these volumes virtual visitors were supposed to engage in rituals of reflection. The collective site was live throughout the entirety of the project. Both students and I could communicate within game and design in real time.
After creating their pavilions, they were tasked to construct them physically using wooden blocks they cut in the wood shop and produced analog drawings to represent their spaces.
