What does it mean to create a "playful space”?
Can an unconventional exploration of materials for
model-making inform the experience of play? What elements of play defined our childhood? How can we transform these elements into architecture? How would a child understand and interpret space? How can space be child-ish in nature, where children can jump, play, run, dream, and escape to be themselves?
The ChildIsh Space project invited students to forget the rules and have fun. They were encouraged to model-build and draw by playing. This project engaged first-year students with questions of architectural scale, playful conceptual thinking and model-making with unconventional materials. After experimenting with the tectonics of found materials as a collective, they developed designs of small pavilions where kids can be kids.
